Design Process

It turns out, this is a pretty good process for life in general.

When you’re staring at a blank sheet of paper or helping a friend that asks for advice; I find that I generally adhere to this simple, four-point process to frame my next steps. I also like to share the process with colleagues when appropriate because it helps everyone stay on course.

For example, how would I approach creating a presentation.

I try to start all presentations with the classic, “what is the one thing you want your audience to walk away knowing?” OUTCOME.

Then I work on the script or help a colleague write the story. What is life like now and how could it be better. The usual suspects; a hero, conflict and resolution. STRUCTURE.

Now the flow (no mention of cool visuals yet) and the how we’re going to tell the story starts to come together. Focus on me (presenter) or look at one simple concept on the slide and hammer it home? Are we going to use motion? Keep the slides low-fidelity and go big, then edit back. INTERACTION.

Lastly, I find or create the best visuals possible given the budget, time and resources. I love to create original art and I have discovered some amazing places to pull from (legally). And, of course the tools are only getting better. VISUALS.
